Everyday Sexism

01.05.2013 | Blog , Thoughts | BY:

It's the 21st century. As women, we can vote, go to work and run the world. We've made big steps and that's great. But what about small steps? Getting jeered at by male co-workers, being inappropriately groped on public transport or simply seeing your boyfriend being handed the bill every time you go out for dinner; these are all incidents the modern day woman still has to endure.

Making us aware of this is Laura Bates' internet sensation The Everyday Sexism Project. On her site, Bates describes the ethos of the project: “It seems to be increasingly difficult to talk about sexism, equality and women’s rights in a modern society that perceives itself to have achieved gender equality. If you have experienced sexism, just everyday, small, so-used-to-it-you-almost-just-accept-it sexism, please share your story so we can prove how widespread the problem really is. And nobody will be able to say we can’t talk about it anymore.”

The site now has over 25,000 entries from women all over the world, ranging from extreme sexual abuse stories to recounts of humorous sexist remarks. The Everyday Sexism Project also features stories from men frustrated by the way their own gender views the opposite sex. “This time last year, I had an idea. Today, 25,000 women's voices have turned it into so much more,” Bates says of the surprisingly large response to her site. With a potential book in the pipeline and the project receiving new reports every day, it seems we have a worldwide movement on our hands.

Young and Beautiful

29.04.2013 | Blog , Music | BY:

Next month marks the release of Baz Luhrmann's eagerly anticipated film adaption of The Great Gatsby. The soundtrack seems to be racking up as many stars as the movie, with Lana Del Rey's offering of Young And Beautiful already garnering thousands of listens on Soundcloud. Del Rey – who wrote the track with Rick mobile casino Nowels – recently described Luhrmann's take on the F Scott Fitzgerald classic as “highly glamorous and exciting”.

The ballad features haunting vocals typical of Del Rey's style, with dreamy strings and insecure lyrics. Jay-Z has curated the overall soundtrack, which also includes Beyoncé, Florence The Machine, Andre 3000, Fergie, Jack White, will.i.am and Emeli Sandé.

The Great Gatsby debuts on May 16 in the UK with the soundtrack set to release on May 7.

Charlie May x Danielle Foster

23.04.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

When Charlie May sent her AW13 collection down the catwalk this year, each look had its own piece from her recent collaboration with accessories designer Danielle Foster. Their capsule collection heavily features vinyl plastic on leather bags and jewellery, keeping in line with both Charlie May’s minimalist and Danielle Foster’s timeless aesthetic.

Twin spoke to May about the joint design venture…

When did you discover Danielle Foster’s accessories?

I discovered Danielle through Bengt, who was my first stockist and started seeing her bags popping up everywhere. I loved the classic design and heavy focus on hardware on leather.

What is it about Danielle’s designs that captured your attention and made you realise that your collections could compliment each other?

I love that Danielle’s bags are so raw. They’re finished in a classic and traditional way, but add in chunky gold hardware and even some human hair so you’re on your way to something unique and unusual, which I relate to a lot with my work. Classic tailoring in unexpected fabrications and cuts is something I love to do.

What was the collaboration process like? How did it differ from your usual creative process?

I loved working together, it was very easy and we both knew to keep it simple. Danielle had already been thinking up shapes when I brought in the leathers and designs for my AW13 collection. I’ve always wanted to work with clear plastic too, which matched perfectly to my icy inspiration.

What materials did you utilise in the collaboration?

The bags are mostly made from traditional thick saddle leather. The only unusual material was the clear vinyl plastic, which I absolutely love in the satchel. I feel there are lots of clear bags around at the moment but none as cool as our satchel! I think the clear against the heavy black is really strong. I really liked Danielle’s braided handles on the tote bags, to give a cool little detail on a classic.

How do the accessories accentuate your collection?

I always think bags finish off a collection perfectly, it’s like having the whole package. A lot of my AW13 collection was quite matchy. The classic satchels were great to pair with a few trouser suits to step it up a notch and also to toughen up some of the floatier silk looks.

Who in the future would you like to collaborate with?

I have a couple of super exciting collaborations for next season that I’m not quite ready to blab about, but I can reveal that it will include shoes!

Why do you think collaborations between designers are such a big commodity nowadays?

I think collaborations are amazing for young designers to get their names heard. Working with other designers, you’re effectively sharing each others fan bases and reaching a wider audience.

The Charlie May x Danielle Foster collection will be released in August on BengtFashion, The Unconventional and the designers’ respective own e-commerce sites.

When Lacroix Met Schiaparelli

22.04.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

Elsa Schiaparelli's innovative, Surrealist designs provided a fresh breath of fashion air in the industry from the 1920s up until her house's closure in 1954.  Once confined to fashion museums and archives of decades past, the label is now receiving a revival through none other than Christian Lacroix.

The eccentric designer will be creating an haute couture collection for Schiaparelli as the first step in the house's relaunch, which will continue with annual creative collaborations. Showing in July, the 15-piece strong collection is sure to be as dramatic and unapologetically luxurious as the creations which made Lacroix a household name.

The French designer has described his vision for the label as a mix of “high and low, sophistication and naïveté, black and color, austerity contrasting with a fantasy, the luxury of high society and a sense of the people’s choice”.  We'll definitely be keeping an eye on the results of this ongoing and well-deserved tribute to one of fashion's most influential female fashion designers.

Sixties Insight

18.04.2013 | Art , Blog | BY:

For most people, London in the Swinging Sixties equals glitter, glamour and overall excess. However as Dorothy Bohm’s exhibition at Proud Chelsea proves, there was an equally captivating side to be seen in everyday metropolitan life.

“Almost every area had its own character and I knew I was undertaking a very difficult task. I tried not to be content with just the facade or outward appearance of things. I hoped to penetrate just beyond that, to portray a living London: the people who pursued their daily occupations, walked, talked, ate or relaxed and dressed in the fashions of the time,” the photographer says of her decision to capture the city through the lens of her Rolleiflex camera.

From youth culture to panoramic views, the result is a nostalgic and unique view of The Big Smoke.

Dorothy Bohm: Sixties London is on display until April 28th at Proud Chelsea, 161 King”s Rd  London, SW3 5XP.

RIP Margaret Thatcher

11.04.2013 | Blog | BY:

Say what you will about her political stance,  but Margaret Thatcher was undoubtedly a woman of influence.

As the country’s longest serving and only female Prime Minister, she steered the country through times of high unemployment rates and social uprising, standing strong in the male-dominated world of politics with her trademark bouffant hair and power suits.

On Monday, 8 April 2013, London may have lost its Iron Lady, but her legacy will forever live on.
