Opening Ceremony x Spring Breakers

08.04.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

Harmony Korine’s latest film, Spring Breakers, is a controversial take on the American rite of party passage. Opening Ceremony decided to bottle up  the Kids writer’s latest work of social commentary into an equally wild ride of a collection.

Created by costume designer Heidi Bivens, the result is a neon-hued, sportswear casual range of sweatpants, mesh tops, wristbands,  bandanas and of course, bikinis, topped off with slogans and artwork produced in collaboration with NY artist REAS.

Keep calm and party on in these laidback threads.

The Opening Ceremony x Spring Breakers collection is now available exclusively at the Opening Ceremony boutique in London and online

Although Ferreira”s Everything Is Embarrassing EP has been available to buy in the US since late last year, it will be officially released in the UK tomorrow.

A Different Shade of Grey

05.04.2013 | Blog , Culture | BY:

There is perhaps no title that defines literary overkill quite like Fifty Shades of Grey. The purpose being to seemingly fulfill the intimate fantasies of the every day woman, it was the book on everybody’s lips last year. However, a direct response to James’ novel (although probably unlikely to achieve the same level of fame and a potential clothing line) proves that Mr Christian Grey simply wasn’t for everyone.

Fifty Shades of Feminism is a collection of fifty women’s thoughts on what being a woman today means to them. The book contains thoughts from politicians, youth and cultural leaders, barristers, actors and writers to name a few— from Siri Hustvedt and Jeanette Winterson to Ahdaf Soueif and Linda Grant.

Released fifty years after the publication of The Feminine Mystique, the book is a product of editor Lisa Appignanesi’s beliefs, “In any event, we were leaving Grey to become a spectrum of 50 vibrant varieties of feminism — women who can rally round Malala Yousafzai, or the victims of gang rape, acknowledge that the sheer accessibility of violence in sexuality is having terrible effects on our children’s lives, and speak out about sexist practices, while agreeing that our taste in books, humour, lifestyles or political parties can be quite different.”

Fifty Shades of Feminism is now available and published by Guardian Books.

Human Made x Coca-Cola

04.04.2013 | Blog | BY:

There is nothing that conjures up a bit of retro nostalgia quite as sweetly as a vintage glass Coca-Cola bottles. Inspired by this cult item, the founder of A Bathing Ape and fashion designer NIGO has teamed up with iconic Japanese boutique Beams for his latest label, Human Made.

“I have been wearing Coco-Cola since back in high school – be it vintage T’s or my retro red Coke leather jacket, which is one of my most prized possessions. I was also the Japan Coca-Cola yo-yo champion back in the 80s, so this collaboration was a long time coming,” he enthusiastically explains.

If you can’t make it all the way to Japan, be sure to check out the collection at Shoreditch store, East London. Come summer, all we want to do is pop open a bottle of that carbonated, syrupy sweet brew and kick back in the park in these cool streetwear threads.

The Life Of Candy

03.04.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

Fashion film has emerged as an innovative new approach to the genre, but leave it to Prada to pull out the big guns. For their new fragrance Candy L’Eau – a citrus, sweet pea and benzoin-scented flanker to the hit original created by Daniela Andrier – the house decided to let Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola create their own interpretation of the scent.

French actress Léa Seydoux stars in the playful short as the coquettish and love-torn protagonist, Candy. Just like this scent is a more lightweight interpretation of the 2011 original, Candy L’Eau is a playful take on joie de vivre. And too good to miss.

Watch the film and behind the scenes footage below.

Other Graces

02.04.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

For seven years, photographer Sante D’Orazio, who has lensed the likes of the Rollings Stones and Kate Moss for publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair, disappeared from the spotlight.

Now a retrospective at Christie’s featuring his 45 most iconic portraits will pay tribute to the New Yorker’s two-decades plus long  career, and possibly usher in a new era of his work.

With D’Orazio’s sensual and glamourous images of seventies rock stars, eighties supermodels and nineties pop stars already having garnered a cult status, we’re definitely rooting for this comeback kid.

Other Graces exhibits until April 19th.

Twin Sunday Soundtrack – Bleached

31.03.2013 | Blog , Music | BY:

What can I say about Bleached… Firstly, they are two sisters (Jennifer and Jessica) who are effortlessly oozing the Twin girl attitude and energy. They follow no rules. But perhaps if they did, the pair’s understanding of regulative instruction would probably be something rather similar to those catchy slogans you find printed on stereotypical punk tees at festivals and Camden Market: ‘Live fast, die young,‘ ‘No Regrets,’ ‘Rock ‘till you die.’ The title of their debut album, ‘Ride Your Heart’ is another addition to this Bleached-Rule-Book…

Secondly, they also create some pretty awesome music. The sound is rough yet melodic, focused yet loud – Essentially a wonderful gnarly noise of bouncy punk-pop reminiscent of the music produced by fellow Rockin’ ladies, Vivian Girls and Wild Flag.

Ride you Heart is released tomorrow, followed by an extensive European tour.

How Soon Is Smithsfest?

29.03.2013 | Blog , Music | BY:

With only five years together as a band, the effect that The Smiths have had on music, culture, and if you’re a fan of Morrissey, pretty much anything, is unbelievable. It seems there is an insatiable thirst for more from the infamous four that split 26 years ago – and that is where the Institute of Contemporary Art steps in.

Smithsfest is a two-day festival running this weekend at the Strand gallery, comprised of talks, performance, art and film, with the purpose to survey the artistic and cultural impact of The Smiths. A barber offering Moz-esque quiffs, a Q&A with Saint Morrissey author Mark Simpson and 80s DJ sets late into the night means that this will undoubtedly be the last weekend of any importance.

Wild Heart

28.03.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

Zadig & Voltaire have collaborated with New York jewellery designer Pamela Love to create a six-piece collection, titled Wild Heart, that fuses the mysticism and spirit of the brand with Love’s own inspirations. Love started her own brand in her Brooklyn apartment, originally only wearing the designs herself, but her work as a stylist and art director led to her setting up the label in 2006.

Love consistenly channels the American Southwest and Native American symbols in her designs. For this collaboration she created pieces that explore the balance between good and evil. “I really like the imagery of the brand,” Love says, “these black contrasts, this rock-and-roll feeling mixed with feminine attributes. These elements add up to a strong identity which has a beautiful sensitivity that is completely in line with my perspective.” The collection itself utilises materials such as gold, copper and oxidized silver in snake rings, fang necklaces, earrings and bangles.

Pamela Love for Zadig & Voltaire launches  and in store on April 3.

Twin Picks: And Other Stories

26.03.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

& Other Stories is the latest venture from the Swedish company that gave us COS and H&M. “Today, a woman with a love for fashion creates her own style,” states the new brand, which is why they are providing us with the ingredients to make up our own.

What first attracted us to the site was the fact that after a few moments browsing, you might as well be lusting after someone else’s streetstyle snaps. Using a blog-like layout makes the site and inevitably the brand more accessible. Just like bloggers, who have strong opinions but don’t necessarily force those on to you like a biannual glossy might, & Other Stories is doing the same. Trends are not there to be followed; they are simply guidelines according to the Stockholm and Paris design teams.

The Regent Street store is welcoming, modern and chic. With more products that are not on the site, we urge you to pop down and have a browse. What you are bound to notice is the quality of each piece. The garments are designed to last the story of your lifetime, not just the current season.

These are Twin‘s favourite pieces from their current spring/summer 2013 collection.

Asymmetric Layered Dress, £39 & Cuff Chain Earrings, £12

Jaquard Trousers, £65 & Leather Sandals, £79

A Girl-Style Revolution

25.03.2013 | Blog , Culture | BY:

It’s been twenty years this month since Kathleen Hanna, Tobi Vail and Kathy Wilcox AKA Bikini Kill last toured the UK with the new found intention of liberating girls through the punk scene.

Cited as a strong influence by nearly all major female groups and artists, from the Spice Girls to Beth Ditto, it’s hard to imagine the state of the music industry today if Riot Grrrl had never happened.

Twin takes a look back through the group’s live performances; bold, raw and the driving force behind what we know now as girl power.

Twin Sunday Soundtrack: Girl Called Johnny

24.03.2013 | Blog , Music | BY:

This week we’ve been lusting over a girl. In particular a Girl Called Johnny – the latest musical project from ex-Ramona vocalist and front-woman, Karen Anne. The debut single Heaven Knows is a beautiful story of heartache and lost love featuring catchy heartfelt lyrics that can undoubtedly relate to any twenty-something-year-old girl (even those not called Johnny).

Since going solo, Karen has embraced the opportunity to create a completely personalised record whilst swapping Ramonas staple punk-rock sound for a refreshingly mellow indie approach reminiscent of early sixties mod-pop, “Ray Davis is a major influence – he writes the most beautiful lyrics, especially about London,” she told Twin. “Also a lot of the other bands I love like The Smiths and New York Dolls are influenced by all the sixties’ girl bands so I guess it all comes from the same place…”

As well as her music, Karen Anne has also become renowned for her sugary-sweet boyish looks (think Debbie Harry meets Edie Sedgwick) after posing as the face of Burberry back in 2011. However music is most certainly on the top of her to-do list for 2013. “Expect an album for sure, I’m also working on a new video right now which is exciting!”

Twin decided to get to know A Girl Called Johnny with a quick either/or game…

Sweet or savoury?

Savoury.

Leather or denim?

Both. Together. Always.

Guitars or beats?

Guitars.

Pub or club?

Pub never club.

Tea or coffee?

Coffee.

Heels or flats?

Flats.

City exploration or country stroll?

City exploration.

‘Heaven Knows’ is released on April 1.

Screentest

22.03.2013 | Blog , Culture | BY:

Student films get a bad rep, with cliches of shaky footage, bad lighting and even worse scripts being the norm. But even the queen of pop Madonna obtained some of her first media exposure in a short film entitled The Egg. If it works for Madge, then surely there is some unexplored potential to be found in this arena.

Helping charter this territory is Screentest Festival, an event championing the UK’s undiscovered Bigelows and Boyles. Since 2004, the annual festival has been bringing together a vast range of aspiring film talent. From drama to documentary, flicks from every genre will be screened alongside workshops and talks with industry figures, making it the ideal place for those looking to get their reels onto the big screen and curious film aficionados alike.

Screentest Festival runs from March 22 – 24 at South Bank University, 103 Borough Rd , SE1 0AA.

Black Score Slogans

21.03.2013 | Blog | BY:

Simeon Farrar is the creative mind behind contemporary T-shirt brand Black Score. After studying fine art, Farrar moved from canvas to material and went on to win the New Generation Award at London Fashion Week three times. He produces a self-titled Ready To Wear collection for both men and women, but his latest venture into slogan T-shirts was especially eye-catching. The humourous brand is known for its fashionable one-liners. Twin caught up with the man who invented the slogan “give us a cuddle, Susie Bubble.”

You have a fine art background, so how did you end up designing T-shirts?

I started painting and screenprinting on T-shirts mainly as another surface and out of boredom with canvas. The images seemed to have a different kind of life when they were on a garment than restricted on a canvas. It soon became a business and I’ve never looked back.

How is Black Score different to your self-titled line?

I always used to squeeze strange and quirky comical drawings into the Simeon Farrar line so I wanted to start something that just focused on that bizarre part of my brain. I also wanted a very simple T-shirt brand that had the freedom to reference whatever it wanted. We have such diverse cultural reference points in Black Score, from skateboarders to top models to dogs with socks on their rude bits. How many other brands can boast that mix? It’s totally free to comment on anything, nobody is safe.

What is it about fashion, and those famous faces within it, that inspires your subject matter?

I really wanted to make glib slogan tees that referenced the fashion industry, mainly because Black Score assumes a position slightly outside of that industry and more as an onlooker. From that we got some great support from people like Jourdan Dunn and Cara Delevingne. Both these girls are so current and it would be wrong for Black Score not to acknowledge that with a T-shirt for each.

You previously mentioned that you are influenced by the city and that it is a metaphor for this reality. What is it about the metropolitan life that inspires you?

It’s the diversity and anonymity of a city that has always inspired my art. Within this environment you can experience a type of freedom that is rarely experienced anywhere else. It’s all about limitlessness and being able to be whoever and do whatever you want.

As an artist first, do you find the process of printing slogan t-shirts limiting?

No, not at all. I think it’s incredibly creative. There’s not much space on a T-shirt so a good slogan has to act like a haiku poem. It has to say exactly the right thing in such a brief window of opportunity. I can’t believe I’ve just made the slogan T-shirt sound so high brow. Sorry.

You have collaborated with Grazia and also made a T-shirt for Glamour‘s anniversary. If you were to make a Twin T-shirt, what would it be?

Who knows, I don’t know what these things are going to look like until the last minute. It would rule though. I know that much.

Models Cara Delevingne and Jordan Dunn have both worn your designs. Who else would you like to see in your tees?

Mick Jagger in the Georgia May tee would be nice, and Karl in the Choupette tee is inevitable.

Who can we expect to see featured in the next collection?

I’ve got a hip hop dog crew drawing on the go plus a nice series called Mutts With Butts planned. But don’t tell anyone.

The Dior Department

20.03.2013 | Blog , Fashion | BY:

Dior’s status as an icon of French luxury fashion is indisputable, however it is a lesser known fact the designer himself was an enthusiastic Anglophile, often working with the likes of Princess Margaret and Cecil Beaton.

Dior at Harrods has been launched to commemorate this fusion of French style with British charm. More than a mere fashion installation, it is a full immersion into the house’s world of couture, accessories and fragrance with an added quintessentially English touch.

Raf Simons’ designs sit alongside royal beefeaters, Royal Mail postboxes are placed next to artistic reinventions of the Lady Dior handbag and a pop-up café inspired by Salon de Thé culture offers a Parisian take on afternoon tea. The collaboration also marks the exclusive launch of the brand’s new high-end fragrance, Gris Montaigne, a chypre blend of Calabrian bergamot, Turkish rose, patchouli, jasmine sambac and woody moss.

Whether you prefer to start by viewing the Avenue Montaigne facade or admiring the late fashion legend’s personal sketches, there is no better way to spend an afternoon than by getting lost in the far-reaching realms of the Dior universe.

Dior at Harrods runs until April 16.

BRUTUS X DR MARTENS

18.03.2013 | Blog , Culture , Fashion | BY:

Twin loves a bit of unisex dressing and a good old designer collaboration or two. Thankfully, Dr. Martens and Brutus Trimfit have joined forces for yet another season to create what might possibly be the unisex match-made-in-heaven. For decades, these two heritage brands have been synonymous with sub-cultural style, acquiring a dedicated cult following of fans along the way. The duo’s latest collection in particular pays homage to the Suedeheads of the late 1960s with a re-creation of Brutus’ iconic gingham ’69 shirt plastered in a classic Dr. Marten’s cherry red and mustard yellow colourway.

Brutus Trimfit for Dr. Martens shirt styles are available from the 29th March at brutus-trimfit.com and drmartens.com
